US NEWS AND WORLD REPORT magazine reported in their June 16, 2008 issue that “Retirement Can Be a Time for Starting Up. Last month he (Warner) launched his website, <thecookingsuite.com>. It sells specialized kitchen products, “discount cookware sets”, at discount prices and offers cooking and kitchen tips.” The magazine goes on to say “But retirement does provide some advantage for entrepreneurs who missed taking the plunge when they were younger. Discount Cookware USA officialy opened its website doors as The Cooking Suite.com May 12, 2008 and is owned by Carlos and Sue Warner of Conover, North Carolina. It is a home based business featuring discount cookware, that the Warner's continue to develop and improve product choices and services offered. Carlos is a retired newspaper executive and Sue, a retired nurse. They both have a passion for gourmet cooking, Sue in the kitchen and Carlos on the outdoor grill.
Carlos’ story:
November, 1996, Carlos was diagnosed with prostate cancer and required open surgery In January 1997. Fortunately the cancer was contained within the prostate gland. Neither chemotherapy nor radiation treatments were required following surgery. Seven weeks later emergency surgery was required to remove a burst gall bladder. This led to some internal infection problems that resulted in pancreatitis. An additional four months of treatment was needed to heal the pancreas and to move Carlos on to his newspaper career. Three years later in June 2003, Carlos underwent triple bypass surgery to erase clogged arteries leading to his heart.
During the”Never will I forget” years, as Carlos describes it, he educated himself about a healthier eating lifestyle that might prevent future health problems. Counting calories, checking cholesterol levels, and learning to cook using lower fat ingredients became a passion and lifestyle. At first, it was difficult because most restaurants used fatty vegetable oil and offered more fried food choices than baked or broiled. At the grocery stores, food labeling was not as clear and present as today. Today, there are better choices at both restaurants and grocery stores.
Sue’s story:
Sue had weight issues from the time she was in elementary school. By the time she reached her mid fifties she weighed 218 pounds, and feeling the weight of each pound. Walking up and down steps at the hospital where she worked was excruciating. She decided to do something about it and joined the local Weight Watcher Club. She immediately grew to respect her leader and followed their program. She remembers walking at the Mall and being passed by 80 year old women, while she was gasping for breath to keep within sight distance. With the help of The Weight Watchers healthier eating program and the challenge to out-walk these same 80 year old women at the Mall, Sue lost 78 pounds in 18 months.
